National Republican African American Caucus National Chair, Jean Howard-Hill Enters Race for Tennessee Third District Congressional Race

Friends and campaign supporters of Dr. Jean Howard-Hill are rallying around her bid for the third district congressional seat by celebrating her birthday on March 27, 2010, at 2:00, at 1901 Payne Road. The 39 Again Birthday Party is a celebration of her birthday as well as a campaign fundraiser. In lure of a gift, those attending may make a donation to her campaign in any amount from $3.90 and up. For more information you may contact campaign managers LaShunda Hill or Grace Williams at 505-2624. The event is open to the general public.

As a 31 year veteran African American Republican, Jean Howard-Hill came into the Republican Party in 1979 because she believed in the Lincoln core values of the Republican party.

She has served as the national chair for the National Black Republican Women with her late husband, Attorney Bobby Lee Hill serving as the head of the Black Republican Men for Change from 1987 to his death in 1991. After his death up until 1993, she remained head of the organization, and in 1999 combined the two groups to form the National Republican African American Caucus[NRAAC]. Presently she is the national chair for the NRAAC, with a national membership goal mandate of 100,000 strong for 2010. The NRAAC is comprised of African American people of spirit and faith, following the principles of President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas, who see the need to bring civility, stability, accountability, morality and racial inclusion back into Republican politics.

“I have known Jean Howard-Hill since 1979 and as an actively involved Republican, I am happy to support and to serve as one of her campaign managers. She has the qualifications to go to Washington and to make changes”, says Republican Grace Williams.

Campaign manager and daughter, LaShunda Hill echoes the same sentiment in saying, “We believe because of her knowledge of years of teaching American Government and how understanding of how government works, and the heart that she has for the people, that Jean Howard-Hill by far has the most to offer as a candidate.”

Outside of her role as the National Republican African American Caucus [NRAAC] national chair, she also has taught full time and as an adjunct, courses in American Government, State and Local Government, and International Politics and Culture of Nonwestern Countries at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and was voted 2006 Outstanding Professor of the year. Additionally, from 1976 to 1979, she designed and directed the “Democracy In Action” Program, which was a civics programs taught in the local school systems. Howard-Hill has been called upon to give her political take, on a local and national level as a political analyst and commentator.

She holds a B.A. degree in Urban Planning and Government from Wheaton College, in Norton, Massachusetts, a doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville College of Law, and is presently earning a PhilD in Philosophy with a focus on social research in the areas of family, church and community at Oxford Graduate School. She holds membership in the American Political Science Association, National Conference of Black Political Scientists, and the International Political Science Association.

She has created and directed the Many Faces of Diversity at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, which teaches these skills to minority, “at-risk”, and first generation college bound students. She is currently working on the Tennessee Youth Research Study, a research project aimed at identifying causes and providing connectors to reconnect to the youth of this generation.

She also is ordained clergy and heads The Shekinah Glory Global Ministries, overseeing 47 ministries throughout Africa and serves as pastor over the local ministry.

Howard-Hill is well known for her community involvement. But she is best known for her “Pull up Your Pants and Dress for Success Campaign” to improve the appearance and fate of African American males, which made headlines in 2008. Affectionately she is known as the “Pull-up Pants Professor” and “Second Mom” to the many young men of whom she has asked, “Son, you got your pants up?”

Those issues which she feels are central to the people of the third district includes: job creation; survival of small businesses; education K-12; affordable higher education; curbing deficit spending; affordable and accessible healthcare; unfair credit card and lending practices; the fate of social security; responsible and accountable government; traditional family values; active duty and veteran issues, government corruption; and failure of elected leaders to listen to and represent those they serve.
